Welcome!
Dr. Ronald Fieve is a leading psychopharmacologist in the treatment of Mood Disorders including Depression; Bipolar I and II Disorders (also known as Manic Depression), Anxiety Disorders and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He also specializes in the differential diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which is often confused with early onset Bipolar Disorders.
No longer are most depressions treated with long and expensive courses of psychotherapy. Physicians known as psychopharmacologists, who are experts in using medications to treat psychiatric chemical imbalances, now treat the above disorders with medication and cognitive psychotherapy. The concept of depression has been expanded to include more than a blue mood or suicidal thoughts (i.e. the entire spectrum of depression and elated mood including hyperactive syndrome). The newest antidepressants, along with Lithium and Depakote, developed over the last two decades have helped patients and their families avoid untold weeks and years of hospitalization, divorce, difficulty on the job and untold emotional suffering. Surprisingly, some mood disorders can at times be highly beneficial. In Dr. Fieve’s first edition of Moodswing, he describes that throughout history, as well as in today’s society, there are many highly productive and creative individuals who also suffer from Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorder. With the major advancements in psychopharmacology and mental health that we've seen over the past 30 years, today the outlook is promising for a patient suffering from depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. No one needs to live with depression.
