As a graduate of Harvard Medical School, with extensive train in psychopharmacology and psychiatry, he fulfilled his residencies at New York Hospital in internal medicine, and in psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York City. Dr. Fieve was the professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University. He continues to be chief of research at the department of lithium studies at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and founder of the former Foundation for Depression and Manic Depression Inc. He continues to be the executive director of the new Foundation for Mood Disorders.
Among many books Dr. Fieve has authored his best-selling book, Moodswing, has been world renowed in many languages and a research tool in many psychiatric schools. Other authored titles of Dr. Fieve’s books are: Dr. Fieve on Depression (Bantam, 1997), Prozac: Questions and Answers for Patients, Families and Physicians (Avon, 1994), Second Opinion on Lithium Therapy for Depression and Manic Depression (1996), Bipolar II (Rodale, 2006) and Bipolar Breakthrough (Rodale, 2009).
Dr Fieve continues to serve on the editorial boards of two well known French scientific journals, L’Encephale and Lithium, and has published more than 300 articles in scientific journals in the United states and abroad. He has been invited several times to speak as an expert in psychiatry on television and conferences worldwide.
Dr Fieve continues to practice at his private practice : Fieve Depression Center and Fieve Clinical Services (FCS) research office at 952 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York. In his practice, Dr. Fieve and his practitioners treat private patients, perform second opinion consultations, serve as expert witnesses in litigation cases and perform “no fee” clinical trials for experimental drugs under development for the pharmaceutical industry.
